Hello there! Today we shall be going over some of the possible symptoms of a radiator hose leak. Along with this some other important things that are a need to know basis.
First off the vehicles cooling system is very important because it takes care of your engine by preventing it from overheating. The main thing is the radiator and several other parts that are connected to it.
Such as the heater core, water pump, thermostat, heater fans, and transmission cooler lines. When a radiator hose fails its a complete mess to the cooling system. It will be easy to find as long as you can look underneath the car as well.
One of the first things to look for is a line with cracks or a separated line. A good functioning radiator should have metal clamps and feel stiff against the hoses.
Some hoses may break if there begins to be major swelling in the lines this includes cracks,leaks and even holes. As I have found out the hard way a hose may be in fine condition but the metal clip or a fitting may have broken off causing the separation.
When you begin to check the engine bay for a coolant hoses make sure to remember which ones you checked.
First there’s the upper coolant hose connecting from the water pump to the radiator. Then you’ll find anywhere from 1-4 heater hoses with one serving as the input and the other as the output.
The output runs from the heater core to the thermostat. There is also a bleeder hose towards the bottom of the radiator. There are also a lower radiator hose and a steam hose.
These will become defective shortly one after the other so once you check one check the others as well to see if they need replacement.
Most hoses on there last life leak before they break. The best way to find out if there’s a leak is to see if there’s coolant on the ground where you park. Another is to check fluid levels every time you get gas.
If either has occurred pop that hood and start looking at the cooling system. Check each hose and clamps well pull on each hose to see if loose and clamps if the are broken. If all checks out water pump or the radiator may have cracks.
The dashboard which most people do not even bother to look at. There is the speedometer, temperature gauge, battery voltage, oil pressure, and the fuel gauge.
There is more than a check engine light since not everything is apart of the engine as most do no know. There is actually a gauge for low coolant levels which you’d hope to never see.
If anyone reading this has that light on pull over and call a tow. The vehicle is loosing coolant and the radiator may fail if the driving continues.
Most people do not keep an eye on their vehicles temperature gauge. This should be checked almost every 30 seconds while driving to make sure it stays in its normal area.
If the temperature gauge begins to move up then the engine is beginning to overheat which is dangerous and can cost as low as 500$. Pull over immediately check the cooling system while the vehicle is off. Call a tow while checking the hoses to determine the problem.
A broken hose is a big issue do not take it lightly. Do not put this off this could lead to a complete breakdown and leave you stranded. The worst that could happen is the engine overheats and pistons begin to melt.
What to take from this
If any of these symptoms are occurring it could potentially be a failing radiator hose. The hoses are easier and cheap to fix than a radiator which means that you cannot afford to not replace it when told to.
Checking the hoses when the owners manual says to can help you in the longevity of the vehicle. This will help with maintaining the vehicles entire cooling system.
